Civil aviation: carbon emissions reduction on the agenda.
A three-day training session on the question brought together about thirty managers of the CEMAC region from October 30 to November 1, 2018 in Douala.
The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme in International Aviation (CORSIA) takes effect in 2019 and clearly it will be necessary to control carbon emissions (CO2).
Studies confirm that airplanes ‘carbon emissions can affect human health, pollute the air they breathe and deplete the ozone layer. Inspite of the aviation sector’s miniscule contribution of 2% to global carbon emissions (CO2), if nothing is done, it could increase due the exponential growth pace of air traffic.
To face this problem, the ICAO launched CORSIA which aims at protecting the environment and at reducing global warming.During the three- day training participants will agree on actions for a successful implementation of CORSIA.
The three ICAO instructors therefore presented requirements of CORSIA regarding Monitoring, Reporting and Verification MRV, Emissions Monitoring Plan (EMP)) and the regulatory framework in prelude of its full implementation as from January, 2019.
CEMAC region countries, which are all countries with low pollution rates, are encouraged to participate in the pilot phase and in the first phases of the CORSIA as volunteers, in accordance with ICAO’s Annexe 16 on environmental protection and with its resolution A39-3 of the Assembly.
This training of the ICAO would enable CEMAC states to start monitoring CO2 emissions of airline companies in their respective countries by means of the Monitoring, Reporting and Verification MRV tool of the CORSIA scheme and to implement current best practices in countries like Canada and South Africa.
Cameroon has submitted its action plan for the reduction of CO2 and currently benefits from a project of on the installation of photovoltaic solar panels based at the international airport of Douala./This training session marks Cameroon’s commitment to provide the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) with its assistance under its "Buddy Partnership" program.
